In Memoriam

Roger G. Kern (1952 - 2022)

Roger Kern was the co-founder of Agate Biosciences LLC.  He was a brilliant innovator and thinker.  With his PhD from the Plant Growth Laboratory at the University of California - Davis, he spent a science and technology career at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.  With a love of the dream of Mars colonization, he proposed the Mars Greenhouse Experimental Module (Mars GEM) and spent  20+ years advocating for the test flight to prove the technologies desired for a Mars colony to provide food, oxygen, and relaxation time for the Mars colonists.  He is missed by all who knew him as a creative, brilliant, funny, gentle soul.  He co-founded Agate Biosciences, at the time  focusing on consulting in the horticultural industry.  Most of all, he is loved and missed by his wife, a planetary scientist, project manager, and former CEO for Agate Biosciences.  She will carry on the memory of her dear husband for all the years to come.

Agate Biosciences is Plant Agnostic

Our studies and due diligence work crosses all areas of science and systems engineering.

Martian Agriculture: The Key to Survival on Mars

We want to foster and be an active part of all the on-going and future work to grow food on Mars.

A Farewell Message

Tragically, Dr. Kern was struck down by ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease.  In this video news report, we can hear the effects of this terrible disease on his voice.  He carried on as long as anyone could and his passing leaves a void that can never be filled.  He was a genius and a hero of American science, biotechnology, and the future of human habitation on Mars.
